Hopi Ear Candles |
|
The Hopi nation is renowned for their extensive knowledge of healing and their spiritual lifestyle. The translation of the word Hopi means "peaceful ones". Ear candles are used widely throughout North America and Asia and although the current treatment has come to us from the Hopi tribe, the use of ear candles to treat ear problems has been known for centuries, having been used by the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks.
The Hopi candle is not a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out of cotton flax and natural substances such as honey, beeswax, vitamin A and medicinal herbs (Camomile, Sage & St John's Wort).

The treatment is very gentle and relaxing and may take up to an hour, depending on the condition being treated. An unlit candle is placed in the ear so that the client feels what it is like. The candle is then removed and lit horizontally away from the therapist, client and couch and placed correctly in an upright position in the ear. The candle is then allowed to burn down to the marker limit line on the candle. At this point the candle is removed and extinguished in a bowl of water. The client will be requested to turn onto his/her other side and the procedure is repeated. From a physical point of view, a distinction can be made between the following active phases; slight under-pressure (the chimney effect) inside the Ear candles and a vibration of the rising air column through the natural movement of the flame serve to gently massage the ear drum. This has an immediate subjunctive effect of regulating the pressure system. Users spontaneously describe a soothing, liberating, light sensation in the ear/head area. Whilst the candle is burning the pleasant heat sensation is intensified. The lymph system and metabolism can be favourably influenced by this intensive but pleasant and completely painless method of local heat application. After the burning of the candles, the therapist will carry-out a face massage. The client will then be allowed to rest for a few minutes whilst listening to soothing music. The session will conclude by examining the candle filters to determine further treatments. The number of treatments depends on how long the candle takes to burn down and the residue found in the candle filter.
A Hopi Ear Candle session is suitable for all ages (children from the age of 3). Children under 16 must be accompanied by their legal guardian or parent.
CONDITIONS THAT CANNOT BE TREATED It would be inappropriate to carry out a treatment in the following cases:
The ear drum is perforated Grommets or other drainage devices are in place in the ear drum The outer ear is inflamed e.g. active eczema or psoriasis If the receiver is allergic to any of the constituents of the candle If the receiver is under specific medical supervision If a course of antibiotics or other medication is being followed If severe dental work such as root canal work has left the jaw and face sore and possibly in spasm If a current healing process is underway In the first 12 weeks of pregnancy If there is a neck problem which severely hampers its mobility If a Cochlear implant has been fitted. |
